New Studies for Patients Receiving Brain Radiation Treatments

Radiation to the brain can cause difficulties with memory and concentration, known as neurocognitive dysfunction. The David C. Pratt Cancer Center is currently participating in two studies for this condition.

One study, RTOG 0614, is for patients who are beginning whole brain radiation for cancer that has spread to the brain. Participants will receive either memantine (Namenda), a drug currently approved for treatment of Alzheimer’s dementia, or a placebo for 6 months.

The other study, WFU 91105, is for patients who have completed whole or partial brain radiation for a primary brain tumor or other cancer that has spread to the brain. The radiation must have been completed at least 6 months ago. Participants will receive either donepezil (Aricept), a drug currently approved for treatment of Alzheimer’s dementia, or a placebo for 6 months.

In both studies, the investigational treatment is provided free of charge. Periodic testing is performed to see if the treatment is working.

If you would like more information about these trials, please call our research coordinator at 314-251-7058 or ask your radiation oncologist.
